In an effort to save money, it can be tempting to find the cheapest car insurance deal just so we can drive legally and within the terms of any lease or loan agreement.

However, remember what your parents told you about being penny wise and pound foolish. Yes, we all want affordable premiums. But we also want a good company with great coverage when we do need to make a claim on our policy!

• Operating a vehicle will never be without risks. Sure, you cover your car to satisfy legal requirements, but you also do it to minimize those risks. If you are cutting corners on your coverage to save a few bucks, remember those things will not be covered when you have damage to your car.
• You may be able to get a lower price by finding an insurer that offers car insurance discounts you may already qualify for! Insurers are not all the same. We have had this experience ourself. Our old insurer did not offer home insurance, so it also did not offer an auto home policy discount! It also did not offer a discount for a teen driver who had taken driver’s education. By switching to another insurer who gave us a better rate because of these things, we saved about $200 a month!
• The best company for your dad, ex-boss, or golf buddy may not be the best one for you. You shoud ask people you know about their experiences with different companies. Customer service and claims handling are very important things to consider. However, you cannot always assume that the best company for you will be the best one for everybody.

We have had the best luck by combining the convenience of Internet insurance quotes with personal service. We like to use the online systems to compare companies and to get an idea of which insurers are most willing to work for our business. Then we always conclude our business with a personal phone call or two to a live human agent. This way we get a chance to see if the customer service is friendly and helpful, plus we can ask questions about policy details that are confusing.
